In a faraway future, Kelsey Zellar is starting her senior year at yet another school thanks to her twin sister’s troublesome obsession with outlawed virtual reality games. Every school they’ve ever attended is pretty much the same: lunchroom drama, rich kids binging on enhancement candies, and classmates rallying for or against the government’s strict control over everything from entertainment privileges to caffeine consumption. Unlike her sister, Kelsey follows the rules and keeps her nose out of trouble and politics while sniffing out her next flavored latte and favorite novel. But when Kelsey meets a charming book connoisseur, and accepts his offering of a tarot card, she takes the first step toward two new addictions: the guy of her dreams, and his illegal dealing of virtual escapes into her beloved storybooks. Kelsey straddles the worlds of fiction and reality, but is she a fool for believing in her own happy ending? **This series will be serial style with short episodes(15-20k) releasing frequently.
A few months ago I found this series via the great people at Netgalley (if you haven’t been there you need to check it out!) offered by the author herself. Recently she put out a box set of the first 4 books.
The story centers around a set of twins living in a post-apocalyptic and high tech world world where even caffeine intake is regulated.
One of of the aspects about this series that I like is how it follows the order of the Major Arcana (in tarot) and the cards in it. Starting with 0 which is the fool.
The story centers around a pair of twins that have once again had to move to a new area because one of them has been caught playing illegal virtual reality games.
Kelsey’s sister is the one who gets caught (again) and she has forever had to toe the line. Her one vice is coffee or anything with caffeine. She stays within the limits, but has a very hard time doing so. It is during one of her many caffeine runs that she meets the mysterious Xander and from there gets pulled into the world of the Major Arcana.
I am going to continue to read the series but currently am giving what I have read so far a 3 star rating because it is VERY confusing at first. Not to sound snobby, but I consider myself pretty on the ball when it comes to following plot lines, but this series so far is giving me whiplash. The characters are very likable as is the romance aspect, but the story has speed bumps that made me stop and think “uh, what just happened?”
Karen (the author) is putting out about a book a month and each is going to cover a card in the arcana so there will be 22 in all. Each title is $.99 a single title and the boxed sets are a bit more.
